Experience the magic of sugar lift printmaking with Chris Ingham!
Students will learn how to make, ‘cook’ and apply the sugar lift solution, in addition to etching & printing their painterly graphic prints over three days.
Sugar lift is a painterly technique that gives graphic, gestural marks while working directly on the copper plate.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced printmaker, this workshop is all about inspiring creativity and encouraging experimentation.
Discover the painterly marks and gestural potential that working with sugar lift can give you!
Here's a breakdown of what you can expect:
As a group we will start the workshop by making our own sugar lift solution from scratch and at the end of the workshop - each student will take home their own jar! We will then cover various steps of this technique from painting with sugar lift to the satisfaction of airbrush aquatint, before we begin etching the plates. We will then spend some time examining various printing techniques and each participant will produce a small edition of their work.
Techniques included:
1. How to make your own sugar lift Solution
2. Preparation of copper plates for sugar lift
3. Transferring your drawing onto a copper plate
4. Various applications of sugar lift to the copper plate
5. Application of grounds (bitumen)
6. The sugar lift ‘magic moment’ - where we submerge the plate and watch the sugar lift solution dissolve/swell, leaving the image area exposed and the negative area covered in the acid resist ground.
7. Open bite etching
8. Airbrush aquatint (an acrylic based acid resist)
9. Etching the plate in the Edinburgh Etch
10. Printing a small edition!
The fee for this three-day class includes materials. Participants will work on a 20cm x 30cm copper plate and we recommend bringing along image ideas that are relevant to the size of the plate and the graphic nature of the technique.
