Dive into the world of dark field monotypes in this comprehensive two-day workshop!

DETAIL OF ‘THE ACTION OF STORMS’ by August Carpenter, 2021

Dark field monotypes are made by reductively controlling the ‘light’ on an inked up plate. Images are made by either removing sections of ink through various wiping back methods or by adding to the plate with a variety of drawing and painting tools. It is a gestural, responsive process that is truly limitless!

Day 1: Foundations of the Dark Field Monotype
The day will begin with an in-depth examination of the Dark Field process. We will explore and discuss popular methods, applications and techniques over print examples. We will cover the preparation of printing plates, ink application techniques and various mark-making methods. Participants will engage in practical and experimental exercises to explore the fundamental techniques.

Day 2: Advanced Techniques and Applications
The second day of the workshop will see further exploration into monotype technique. We will work on a larger scale on the Sunday, using the beautiful surrounds of the Baldessin Studio to directly inspire the prints we make.

Participants will work on an a variety of plate sizes between roughly A4 to A2 and we welcome you to bring along image ideas that are relevant to the graphic nature of the technique. As we will be experimenting, an open mind and an enthusiastic attitude is all you really need! Students will be encouraged to work at their own pace once we have covered the technical aspects.

Workshop includes:

  • Overview of dark field monotype principles

  • Importance of plate preparation

  • Material choices & tool making

  • Ink application methods

  • Experimental mark-making

  • Wiping techniques

  • Composition & scale consideration

  • Image transfer onto plate
