Learn the basics of etching. Produce a line image on a zinc plate. Explore aquatints for tonal work, and other unique etching techniques. Come along with an idea or a simple drawing and explore the processes of producing a small edition of work.

Zinc plate etching is a relatively simple process that does not require the use of toxic chemicals or strong acids. You can easily make plates at home or in your own studio with simple etching tools and gardening chemicals you can buy at Bunnings!

Zinc plates are etched with a copper sulphate and table salt mordant. A safer alternative to the traditional nitric acid.

You will be working on 2 plates - size of 200x125cm.

Suitable for all levels.

You are advised to book early to avoid disappointment.

What you should bring:

  • Apron

  • Disposable gloves

  • Your lunch (tea & coffee provided)

  • Folio to take home your finished prints (at least A3 size)

ABOUT ROBERT HAILS

Robert works mostly on zinc plates to produce elegant and sometimes whimsical etchings. When printmaking he pays attention to detail, seeks patience and encourages his workshop students to aspire to do the same and take ‘risks’ with their work.

Most of Robert’s works on paper respond to the characters, design, text and mystery of the theatre stage – a happy combination of his commitment to theatre and passion in art. His etchings ask us to enter small narrative worlds and are often teeming with detail.

Robert is an integral part of the Baldessin Press and Studio in St Andrews Victoria where he runs workshops and is an executive member of the Committee of Management.

He also has a studio in Northcote Victoria.

As a teenager he and his brothers Doug and Don helped George Baldessin and Tess Edwards Baldessin build the bluestone studio in St Andrews while he was a student at Eltham High School in the 1970’s.
