This is a two-part workshop consisting of one online session and a weekend.
A special workshop in association with Chris Ingham, August Carpenter and Monique Auricchio’s 2023 joint exhibition at Australian Galleries. An exhibition exploring the painterly possibilities of printmaking through combining experimental approaches to aluminium plate lithography and mono-printing.
Plate lithography is an immediate and accessible technique. Drawing directly on to the aluminium plate, it allows both fine grained detail and careful line work, as well as inky experimental marks. Monoprints produce painterly, colourful, gestural marks that can be used to produce an accent or contrasting layer. The combination delivers expressive unique state prints.
The workshop includes a 2 hour online planning session one week prior to the onsite two-day course. In this session Chris will introduce different possibilities for layered printmaking with lithography and monoprinting, you will get a chance to talk about a project you might like to complete or an approach you might like to explore.
The two-day intensive is a busy hands-on workshop that includes introduction to different techniques as well as plenty of time for supervised play. If you come with a project you wish to complete Chris will work with you to realise your vision.
This workshop is suitable for experienced printmakers who have completed either a mono-printing or a lithography workshop or who have experience in one of these mediums. There will be time to introduce you to the technical aspects of the other medium.
You will work with one lithography key plate and multiple plastic monoprinting plates.
The workshop will cover
Aluminium plate preparation
Transferring drawings to plate
Lithography etching, roll-up and inking techniques
Using acrylic monoprint plates
Additive and subtractive monoprinting techniques with a range of inks and watercolour paints
Building coloured layers, through multiplate printing, stencilling and resists
