Chris Ingham Printing an artwork by Tom Civil

Come and learn this age-old printmaking technique that people continue to fall in love with. The appeal of the etched line is mesmerising, from the old masters to today’s most experimental and innovative artists.

The copper plate allows you to create textured and rich images with incredible detail and a build-up of lines. Artist and master printmaker Chris Ingham will guide you through drawing your image onto a prepared copper plate, which is then etched in an acid bath where the magic begins. The class will introduce participants to many of the possibilities of the medium through working on hard and soft grounds, using drypoint drawing techniques, open-bite and chine colle.  You will be introduced to aquatinting techniques that allow you to build up tone and depth in your imagery.

Uniquely this workshop will introduce you to the rich world of multiplate printing. You will be able to add depth, variations and additional colours to your print by using multiple plates to build up a complex image.  Learn the secrets of successful registration that enable you to seamlessly combine multiple plates into a single image.

The workshop is kept small to ensure plenty of individual attention. It’s also brilliant for those wishing to extend the possibilities of their printmaking or re-acquaint themselves with the medium.  If you are an experienced printmaker and come with a definite project this is a great opportunity to work with a master printmaker.

Two Day Workshop includes:

  • Demonstration on how to apply grounds that allow you to draw onto the plate

  • Transferring a base image to your plate from a drawing

  • Drypoint drawing techniques- scratching the metal plate directly

  • Etching in acid (Ferric Chloride: a safe and easy approach to etching)

  • Preparing for printing and applying inks

  • Chine colle: using coloured tissue and patterned paper underlays

  • Aquatint to add layers of tone

  • Experimental techniques like open-bite which allow deep rich marks

  • Printing on an etching press

  • Tips and tricks for perfect registration

  • Developing strategies for your home studio

You will have the opportunity to work on multiple plates and try out a range of different etching techniques. You will take home a small edition of prints.

**All workshops at Baldessin Studio use low toxic chemicals and adhere to strict OHS work practices**
