Symphony 1 & 2 by Angela Coombs matthews - Monotype

Where painting meets printmaking: the monotype offers the most flexible and creative way to make unique piece prints.

In this workshop you will use large acrylic plates to create layered expressive images. Using acrylic plates and a range of colour mediums including watercolour paints, printmaking inks, calligraphy and fountain-pen inks, you will learn techniques that you can adapt to your own styles of mark-making and use at home or in the studio.

The nature of the process allows participants to work in a playful, spontaneous manner, making gestural, textured and experimental works.

This 2-day workshop allows you to take your time and build a small portfolio of resolved work. The first day will focus on introducing a range of techniques and the second day will allow for more focused supervised play with techniques of your choice.

NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY.

This workshop is suitable for both beginners and those who want to explore this medium further and develop a specific body of work.

Working on 30 x 44cm acrylic plates the workshop includes:

  • Additive method: direct mark making on the plate

  • Reductive method: line drawing or wiping into fields of ink

  • Working with watercolour and oil-based inks

  • Working with mediums like salt and soap for special effects

  • Working with fountain-pen and calligraphy inks

  • Using different papers and preparing for printing

  • Chine colle: using coloured tissue and patterned paper underlays

  • Building coloured layers: through multiplate printing, stencilling and resists

  • Incorporating collage

  • Printing on an etching press

  • Developing strategies for your home studio

This is a busy, hands-on, fun workshop that opens up this versatile style of printmaking and allows you to take home original prints!
