A solander box, also known as a clamshell or drop-spine box, is an archival storage container designed to protect your valuable prints or photographs.

Constructed with acid-free materials, it resembles a book, featuring a rigid case with a hinged lid. The drop-spine design allows it to open flat, facilitating easy access to the enclosed contents.

Typically covered in cloth or leather, the box shields items from environmental factors, ensuring longevity. Used by artists, libraries, archives, and collectors, the solander box safeguards delicate materials, preventing deterioration and preserving their condition for future generations.

If you have ever tried making your own solander box, you will know that you need precision in measuring and cutting, as accuracy is crucial for the box to function effectively.

Guidance from an expert bookbinder is essential!

Your tutor Phil, will guide you through the basic steps of measuring and cutting your box sections. You will then assemble the box sections by gluing.

Explore the varied options for covering your box and personalising it with your colours and materials of choice.

All materials will be provided, but if you have a your own prints you would like to use for the inside of the box, please bring it with you.

For artists and printmakers a Solander Box is an ideal vessel for presenting and storing your artist book or loose prints. A wonderful and unique solution that can add a personlised and completion to any print project.

An ideal workshop for enthusiasts of bookbinding, printing, and artists books

ABOUT PHIL RIDGEWAY - FROM MELBOURNE SCHOOL OF BOOKBINDING

PHIL RIDGEWAY

The truth may be stranger than fiction… fiction can’t be disproved, however…

Born under a road sign, raised by wolves, rescued by a lighthouse keeper. In the right place at the right time, won a competition to be a duke, stint as a milkman, cult following by 3pm via word of mouth, apprenticed to master craftspeople, detour via university, met muse while interning in Europe for food and board. Acquired professional experience through trial and error, with an eyebrow raised….

For the rest, I undertook private studies in bookbinding in the UK and France, developed further in both professional and self driven practice. The MSB was started to pass on the skills and knowledge I’d acquired to anyone who was interested in bookbinding. The OrtBindery grew from that established studio…

Through both, I try to provide bookbinding excellence – in both tuition and services…
