Printmakers Picnic

Our annual printmakers picnic is one of our favourite times of the year!

We celebrate all printmakers, their families and friends on the last Sunday of November each year, at Baldessin Studio.

This is a picnic day for all ages, and a fundraiser to help boost the coffers so the studio can keep functioning .

It’s a great opportunity to get together, meet people, catch up with friends and relax in the bush.

From a cricket match to a picnic

We created the Printmakers’ Picnic in the spirit of the ‘Artists Vs Writers Cricket Match’, a highlight back in the 1970s. George Baldessin, Fred Williams, Roger Kemp and many other artists and students dressed in whites to confront the writers team captained by Stephen Murray Smith down at St Andrews oval. In those days artists were sporty! What happened?

The Printmakers picnic today

We have SPORT (…but not cricket)

The Petanque tournament is fiercely defended and the winner wears the Crown made from a copper etching plate and felt blanket (thanks Etienne and Ros!)

Prizes for the best team. Register pronto on arrival to be in it.

We have LIVE MUSIC!

The ‘Press Gang Band’ headed up by Martin King, Jazmina Cininas, Adrian Kellet and friends (all printmakers) will rock your socks off! Jazmina’s lyrics about all things printmaking and starring well known names are so clever and totally hilarious.

The Open Mic is for anyone with an instrument who wants to have a go, but please register beforehand as this is popular!

We have FOOD!

The battle of the paellas is on again this year, with our Argentinian friends cooking up the giant paellas, (veg included) . Portions are for sale, and all profits go to the Studio fund.

The Cafe will also function with tea, coffee and our famous homemade cakes.

Otherwise, BYO picnic to share.

We have KIDS!

We hold the Teddy Bears’ Picnic on the lower terrace where kids can eat food, play games and meet new friends.

Free entry for kids. Please BYO kids’ food, teddy bears and games.

…and of course, we have ART

Our studio is open during the Printmakers Picnic, as part of the Open Weekend. We invite you to look through our huge variety of beautiful prints made by artists in the studio and perhaps buy a print for that special Christmas present.

All are welcome.

Please car share if possible as we have limited parking spaces.

Festivities begin at noon.

BALDESSIN STUDIO

Concurrently, on the other side of Derby street, twenty-nine selected Baldessin Studio artists will be showing works produced on our presses.

Celebrating George Baldessin’s legacy

George’s legacy to artists is particularly celebrated on this the 21st anniversary of the Baldessin Studio. Thanks to George Baldessin, we have a great space and equipment, as well as a magical history, and clearly defined vision of excellence plus ambience.

You and your friends are warmly invited to come along to the opening of these two exhibitions at Australian Galleries on October 25 to help us celebrate!

We are also launching two new publications: Baldessin- the Legacy, a booklet on the studio, and Paradox and Persuasion- the art of George Baldessin, by Harriet Edquist (reprint new edition).

Fundraising for Baldessin Studio

Thanks to Australian Galleries, their commission on all works sold from the Stockroom Gallery will go towards the Baldessin Studio!

Thanks to all the artists, they will donate half the proceeds of their sales as well, as a fundraiser for our not-for-profit Incorporated Association.

By purchasing artwork from this show, you will be directly supporting the Baldessin Studio to keep providing for artists as we love to do.

See you at opening night!

We are excited to have reached this milestone in our history, and we hope to see as many friends as possible for the opening Tuesday October 25, 6pm.

Be there, or be square!
