Scarab 2022 By Barbie Kjar - Mokulito 56 x 76 cm
Step into the fascinating world of Mokulito—a captivating printmaking technique that merges the principles of lithography with the organic beauty of wood. Mokulito, or "wood lithography," offers a dynamic and experimental approach to printmaking, allowing you to work directly on a wooden surface rather than the traditional lithographic stone or aluminium plate.
During this immersive two-day workshop with artist Barbie Kjar, you’ll learn how to blend pure lithographic marks with the rich, textured qualities of woodcut prints on a single piece of plywood. Using a diverse range of drawing materials—including pencils, crayons, and tusche—you’ll explore the endless possibilities of mark-making directly on the wood, creating imagery that combines the fluidity of lithography with the expressive character of woodgrain.
This workshop is perfect for printmakers, artists, and creatives looking to expand their repertoire and experiment with a versatile, hands-on technique. Whether you’re a seasoned printmaker or a curious beginner, Barbie will guide you through the process, from preparing the wooden surface to printing your final masterpiece.

Barbie Kjar is a Tasmanian artist (Masters of Fine Art at RMIT; Bachelor of Fine Arts and Education, University of Tasmania) with a special interest in Mokulito due to its ‘wonderful and spontaneous mark making potential’. In 2016 Kjar delved into Mokulito further learning directly from Ewa Budka at Art Print Residence in Arenys de Munt, Spain. Her interest was first sparked in 2004 when she was introduced to wood lithography at the Tokyo Art School during an Australia Council residency in Tokyo. Kjar is represented in state, regional and private collections and has completed numerous residencies around the world. Since 1986 she has held 36 solo exhibitions in Australia and more recently in Barcelona and Tokyo.
