After the phenomenal reception to Sarah’s 2024 workshop, Baldessin Studio are thrilled to have artist Sarah Amos presenting an extended masterclass collograph workshop in 2025!

This 5 day workshop explores collograph in its entirety. In addition to making plates, we will focus on using drawing and stencilling techniques to produce distinctive printed paintings on paper. Sarah will take you through using colour to creating more textures and revealing hidden intricacies in your plates.

This workshop is designed for the artist who has had previous experience in printmaking and who wants to take their practice to a new level of exploration.

Emphasis will be placed on the use of non-toxic materials.

You will construct several stable Collograph plates of identical size, incorporating a variety of materials that are affixed, stitched, or incised onto the boards.
These materials encompass paper, textiles, thread, textured fabric, tape, and gel mediums, enabling the development of highly sculpted plates.
Gain proficiency in techniques such as scraping and perforating the surface to craft captivating textures, patterns, as well as organic lines and marks.

This workshop will cover:

·      Multiple plate system and registration techniques for printmaking.

·      Methods for applying ink and paint using stencils on paper.

·      Addressing a common challenge in Collograph, teaching artists how to layer plates effectively without damaging the previous layers.

·      Guidance in the sequencing of plates and organising their colour palette to achieve clear and clean prints with a bold graphic impact.

·      Experimentation with various wet work and drawing mediums, including brushes and pencils.

·      The "French Seam" technique, which involves piecing small works together with archival tape to create larger or shaped Collographs, will be discussed.

Sarah will share her own artwork to demonstrate techniques and offer both independent and class critiques for artists seeking guidance.

“I have been working with the Collograph technique for over 25 years and have along the way taken this discipline to a new level of complexity due to my love for the technique and obsessive experimentation.

I am also committed to the non-toxic process that I have adapted over the years and love the green aspect of this technique in the studio .The multiple plate process and layering technique that I primarily use is a wonderful way to achieve a rich painterly surface with both oil paint and etching ink. In addition I will be using a variety of drawing materials and water based mediums to embellish and add another dimension to my finished pieces”

Sarah Amos has been making multi media prints for over 25 years. Sarah left Australia to go to the USA to study at Tamarind Institute of Lithography in New Mexico were she became a Master Printer.

Sarah also teaches from her home studio year round and has been an Adjunct Professor for12 years at Bennington College, Williams College and Dartmouth College.
