Explore the gestural, tonal and responsive world of Dark Field Monotypes in this two day workshop!

Dark field monotypes are made by reductively controlling the ‘light’ on an inked up plate. Images are made by either removing sections of ink through various wiping back methods or by adding to the plate with a variety of drawing and painting tools. It is a gestural, responsive process that is truly limitless!

Day One will begin with an in-depth introduction to the Dark Field monotype process. We will explore popular methods, applications, and techniques through discussion and examine a selection of print examples. We will then cover different plate preperation techniques, printing plates, applying ink, and we will experiment with a range of mark-making approaches and tools.

Through a series of guided and experimental exercises, you’ll gain a solid understanding of the fundamental techniques and expressive potential of this richly tonal process.

Day Two
will see further exploration into monotype technique. We will work on a larger scale on the Sunday, using the beautiful surrounds of the Baldessin Studio to directly inspire the prints we make. We will also cover the use of Chine Collé to add an additional colour/tone, and also to discover the difference in marks achieved through using different papers.

Participants will work on an a variety of plate sizes (between roughly A4 to A2) and we welcome you to bring along image ideas that are relevant to the graphic nature of the technique. As we will be experimenting, an open mind and an enthusiastic attitude is all you really need!

Workshop includes:

  • Overview of dark field monotype principles

  • Importance of plate preparation

  • Material choices & tool making

  • Ink application and modification

  • Experimental mark-making

  • Wiping techniques

  • Composition & scale consideration

  • Chine Coll
