This print is a monument to being human – and all the people throughout our lives that make us who we are. My love of printmaking is driven by a love for accessible art and the communal nature of printmaking practices. I have learnt my craft through friendship, trial and error, and the sharing of skills through my fellow printmakers at communal studios. And this has very much been true with my experience at Baldessin Studio – a place of warmth and community that encourages experimentation and play, and with the space and technical know-how to make our ideas as artists come to life.

Tom Civil (b.1978) is an artist, muralist, community art facilitator and printmaker. He is a home-made, studio-trained artist who has been making art in the streets of Melbourne for 25 years. Civil has painted over 30 commissioned murals across town and held 12 solo exhibitions.

To mark its 25th year, Baldessin Studio has embarked on a very special project—inviting 53 members of its community to create an editionable print for the Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection. Launching at Sydney Contemporary, the collection is a celebration of the incredible community of artists who engage in the life of the studio, as well as a fundraiser to ensure the organisation can continue its work and sustain its vision, “to inspire and enable innovative printmaking whilst upholding the Baldessin ethic of fostering creativity in all forms”.

Launch / Sydney Contemporary, Sydney, Sept 3-6th 2026 Exhibition / Australian Galleries, Melbourne, Nov 10–8th 2026
