Artist Statement
Xeric light is a homage to both Baldessin Studio, and our dear friend, the ecological artist Lloyd Godman. The making of this work was a personal journey of grief and connection. After Lloyd’s unexpected death I was drawn to paint in his beloved greenhouse, an otherworldly space filled with thousands of bromeliads and tillandsia he had cared for.

During the months working en-plein air surrounded by this ecosystem, I reflected on life and death - what do we tend in our own lives and what legacy will each of us leave? The natural beauty and decay of this living legacy is so potent as the space continues to live, breathe and exude the presence of Lloyd and the connection to nature he cultivated in his own life.

Nicole Bowller (b.1983) is a practicing artist, curator and designer who has been exhibiting since 2009. Her artistic practice is primarily focused on her love of drawing and painting in oil and gouache. Bowller has travelled widely completing residencies and self-directed research where she developed a passion for working en-plein air capturing the essence of place.

Bowller graduated from The University of Melbourne with a Masters of Art Curatorship (2015) and The University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Architecture (2007).

To mark its 25th year, Baldessin Studio has embarked on a very special project—inviting 53 members of its community to create an editionable print for the Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection. Launching at Sydney Contemporary, the collection is a celebration of the incredible community of artists who engage in the life of the studio, as well as a fundraiser to ensure the organisation can continue its work and sustain its vision, “to inspire and enable innovative printmaking whilst upholding the Baldessin ethic of fostering creativity in all forms”.
