Artist Statement
Kenopsia speaks to the emptiness of an abandoned place. It is an invitation to pause and embrace the beauty of being alone where the world slows down and the colours of twilight create space for reflection and wonder. This work is a five plate registered photogravure etching produced using photopolymer plates at the Baldessin Studio, from a photograph I captured in South Australia.

A space for reflection and wonder also perfectly describes my connection to Baldessin Studio. I produce my own plates and proof at the studio surrounded by incredible and talented artists. You might also find me there producing photopolymer plates for other artists and schools or assisting on a photopolymer workshop or studio open day.

From a love of photography and printmaking at high school, Steen Vestergaard (b.1971) completed BA (Phot) at RMIT and HONS (Phot) degrees in the early 1990’s. While commercial and advertising photography provided an income, he held a fundamental belief in the craft of photography. Paired with a desire to print, led to experiments using pre-sensitised zinc plates several times over the next 30years. In 2024, Steen met and worked with Silvi Glattauer, pioneer of photopolymer photogravure etching at the Baldessin Studio, and began using this method to re interpret his images into prints.

To mark its 25th year, Baldessin Studio has embarked on a very special project—inviting 53 members of its community to create an editionable print for the Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection. Launching at Sydney Contemporary, the collection is a celebration of the incredible community of artists who engage in the life of the studio, as well as a fundraiser to ensure the organisation can continue its work and sustain its vision, “to inspire and enable innovative printmaking whilst upholding the Baldessin ethic of fostering creativity in all forms”.
