Artist Statement
View from the Pod extends my ongoing exploration of the supernatural sublime within architectural space into the landscape surrounding Baldessin Studio. Having created work at Baldessin Studio for over a decade, the bushland that enfolds the studio has become a deeply cherished place of creative reflection for me.

Inspired by observations of the dramatic interplay of light filtering through the trees surrounding the Pod in the early morning and evening, I reimagined these moments as a nocturnal scene, where spectral light emanates through the trees. Through this etching, a deeply cherished environment attempts to becomes a vessel for otherworldly narratives and metaphysical enquiry.

Sorcha Mackenzie (b.1993) is a Melbourne based printmaker. After completing a Masters of Contemporary Art at Victorian College of the Arts in 2022, Mackenzie undertook the State Library Victoria Rick Amor Fellowship at Baldessin Studio. It was here she began developing a series of etchings and an artists book recounting the

architectural history of Melbourne’s Princess Theatre, through the lens of the ghost of Frederick Federici.

To mark its 25th year, Baldessin Studio has embarked on a very special project—inviting 53 members of its community to create an editionable print for the Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection. Launching at Sydney Contemporary, the collection is a celebration of the incredible community of artists who engage in the life of the studio, as well as a fundraiser to ensure the organisation can continue its work and sustain its vision, “to inspire and enable innovative printmaking whilst upholding the Baldessin ethic of fostering creativity in all forms”.
