Artist Statement
Resilience is a photogravure print highlighting the functional, intricate structure of an orchid root. As an artist who straddles multiple cultures and continents, I am influenced by the impact of the challenges of life and difficulties in finding a place to belong. I focus on the tortuosity of the roots rather than the beauty of the flower as I am notconcerned with what is overtly beautiful, but on what lies beneath, which is essential for survival. The image serves as a visual metaphor for the unseen strength and the structural foundations necessary to endure harshenvironments like the world in which we live.

My connection with Baldessin Studio began when I attended the 2018 Baldessin/Whitely: Parallel Visions exhibition at the NGV. Inspired by his work and how prolific he was, I signed up to their email list. From day one, I was totally enchanted. I felt at home, the whole studio was so welcoming and the people lovely. I could not stop smiling inbetween intense learning sessions. I was hooked on Photogravure and have returned each year since.

Sharifah Sorayya (b.1960) is a Malaysian-born interdisciplinary artist based on Kaurna land by way of England, Saudi Arabia and Canada. She is heavily influenced by her familial and personal lived history, her eclectic culturalheritage, as well as her observation and experience of racism and social stratification from post-colonial Malaysia to her life in Australia today.Sharifah dances between abstract paintings, textiles and printmaking in dialogue with materials and techniques to highlight the complexities of life: its joys, sadness, unexpected turns and survival.

To mark its 25th year, Baldessin Studio has embarked on a very special project—inviting 53 members of its community to create an editionable print for the Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection. Launching at Sydney Contemporary, the collection is a celebration of the incredible community of artists who engage in the life of the studio, as well as a fundraiser to ensure the organisation can continue its work and sustain its vision, “to inspire and enable innovative printmaking whilst upholding the Baldessin ethic of fostering creativity in all forms”.
