Artist Statement
The old study is loosely based on a theatre production I designed many years ago. I used a number of light bulbs to quietly and evenly light the stage-set of an old, but much, loved study. I believe the simple ‘naked’ light bulb offers a raw and honest mood without the complications of shades that take away the bulbs’ intended purpose.

I have played an integral part of the Baldessin Studio since the early 1970’s where along with others, I helped build the beautiful bluestone building. I now teach traditional etching workshops and play a major role in all Baldessin Studio art and management activities.

Robert Hails (b.1953) works primarily on zinc plates to produce elegant and sometimes whimsical etchings. Hails’ works on paper respond to the characters, design, text and mystery of the theatre stage. When printmaking he pays attention to detail, seeks patience and encourages his students to aspire to do similar…. and to take risks.

To mark its 25th year, Baldessin Studio has embarked on a very special project—inviting 53 members of its community to create an editionable print for the Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection. Launching at Sydney Contemporary, the collection is a celebration of the incredible community of artists who engage in the life of the studio, as well as a fundraiser to ensure the organisation can continue its work and sustain its vision, “to inspire and enable innovative printmaking whilst upholding the Baldessin ethic of fostering creativity in all forms”.
