Artist Statement
Brugonia is a plant that does not exist: it is entirely constructed in the studio. This specimen represents a study of a possible future botanical form in the age of climate crisis. While this work is fictional, it depicts nature producing new forms, structures and reproduction methods in order for its continued survival. The work is formally influenced by 19th century dioramas and botanical illustration as well as 19th century studio photographic practices. Brugonia was printed at Baldessin Studio with Silvi Glattauer as part of a State Library Victoria fellowship.

Nicholas Hubicki is a lens-based artist. He was the 2023 recipient of the State Library Victoria Fellowship Tate Adams Memorial Residency at Baldessin Studio (2022), winner of the Pool Collective grant (2022) and was also included in Speculative Horizons at Contemporary Art Platform, Kuwait City (2023). He has been a finalist in the Bowness Prize at the Museum of Australian Photography in Melbourne and the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Prize (2024). His work has previously been included in Forum 50 at the Munich Stadtmuseum, Germany and has been published in Der Greif, Musée Magazine, Phases Magazine, The Guardian and others.

Hubicki’s current work focuses on both the constructed and natural world drawing upon sources such as landscape, entropy, architecture, botany and geology.
