Artist Statement
My fantastic journey with Baldessin Studio began 12 years ago. This artwork is built around a ship and the women who steer it—an image of the innovative, adventurous spirit I encountered at Baldessin when I very much needed course-correction in my art practice. That spirit has been shaped in a large part by three women at the studio, whose mentorship creates an environment that is nurturing yet unmistakably well run—human, generous, and exacting in equal measure. My work today, in both quality and depth, would not exist without their guidance.

Lana de Jager (b.1971) is a Queensland-based artist who emigrated from South Africa to Australia in 1998. Her art practice investigates loss and grief, mental health and cultural pressures. De Jager applies sketches to polymer etching plates for intaglio printmaking, combined with polyester plate lithography, while always preferencing less-toxic processes in her discipline.

To mark its 25th year, Baldessin Studio has embarked on a very special project—inviting 53 members of its community to create an editionable print for the Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection. Launching at Sydney Contemporary, the collection is a celebration of the incredible community of artists who engage in the life of the studio, as well as a fundraiser to ensure the organisation can continue its work and sustain its vision, “to inspire and enable innovative printmaking whilst upholding the Baldessin ethic of fostering creativity in all forms”.
