Artist Statement
I am a Ballarat-based fine art photographer and my work explores solitude, impermanence and the quiet beauty found in fleeting moments. This is central to my image Kiku, where I used nature as my metaphor. 

Ian Kemp graduated an Advanced Diploma of Photography (Fine Art) from Photography Studies College in 2017, Kemp’s practice has steadily gained recognition through national and international competitions, private commissions and a growing number of solo and group exhibitions. Kemp has had major solo exhibitions including Neverlasting (Art Gallery of Ballarat, Horsham Art Gallery, Willaura Modern) and In Solitude (Yering Station Gallery, and the Central Goldfields Gallery) and Print Works (Ross Creek Gallery). His work has also been featured in the Ballarat International Foto Biennale and publications such as Inside Imaging and Beta: developments in photography. In 2025, Kemp was named a finalist in the Flanagan Art Prize, the Infuse Prize and the Martin Kantor Prize, further cementing his reputation as a distinctive voice in contemporary Australian print works and photography. His images invite viewers to pause, reflect and consider the stillness that often goes unnoticed in daily life.

To mark its 25th year, Baldessin Studio has embarked on a very special project—inviting 53 members of its community to create an editionable print for the Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection. Launching at Sydney Contemporary, the collection is a celebration of the incredible community of artists who engage in the life of the studio, as well as a fundraiser to ensure the organisation can continue its work and sustain its vision, “to inspire and enable innovative printmaking whilst upholding the Baldessin ethic of fostering creativity in all forms”.
