Above and Beyond emerges from an intuitive process of tearing, cutting and layering forms. Developed from hand-torn and cut paper, these shapes are translated into relief print through cut lino and layered transparent colour. Made in the hand-built bluestone workshop of Baldessin Studio, surrounded by the Australian bush, the work reflects the quiet influence of place and the process of making. I hope it invites a slower way of looking, offering moments of quiet contemplation and connection.

Ellie Malin (b.1980) is a Melbourne-based artist working across painting and printmaking. Her chromatic compositions explore memory, place, and emotional resonance through layered colour, architectural forms and organic patterns. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Printmaking) from Monash University and has exhibited nationally and internationally, with works held in public and institutional collections.

To mark its 25th year, Baldessin Studio has embarked on a very special project—inviting 53 members of its community to create an editionable print for the Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection. Launching at Sydney Contemporary, the collection is a celebration of the incredible community of artists who engage in the life of the studio, as well as a fundraiser to ensure the organisation can continue its work and sustain its vision, “to inspire and enable innovative printmaking whilst upholding the Baldessin ethic of fostering creativity in all forms”.

Launch / Sydney Contemporary, Sydney, Sept 3-6th 2026 Exhibition / Australian Galleries, Melbourne, Nov 10–8th 2026
