Red Fruit was made as part of the Tate Adams Memorial State Library Victoria Creative Fellowship at Baldessin Studio. It is part of a series of one-colour woodcuts used to illustrate a book of essays, recipes and photos I researched and executed as part of this fellowship. I chose woodcuts for their immediacy. The style is inspired by the work of Greek artist Alekos Fassianos, as well as vintage restaurant posters. It is a continuation of other prints I’ve made at Baldessin Studio over the years, where I’ve combined printmaking with my food practice.

Ella Mittas (b.1991) is a printmaker, chef and writer who lives and works in Melbourne. Her Greek heritage led her to live and work in Turkey and Greece. Her printmaking is often combined with her cooking and writing practice by using prints to illustrate her cookbooks or writing pieces.

To mark its 25th year, Baldessin Studio has embarked on a very special project—inviting 53 members of its community to create an editionable print for the Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection. Launching at Sydney Contemporary, the collection is a celebration of the incredible community of artists who engage in the life of the studio, as well as a fundraiser to ensure the organisation can continue its work and sustain its vision, “to inspire and enable innovative printmaking whilst upholding the Baldessin ethic of fostering creativity in all forms”.

Launch / Sydney Contemporary, Sydney, Sept 3-6th 2026 Exhibition / Australian Galleries, Melbourne, Nov 10–8th 2026
