Artist Statement
Canopy draws upon tree foliage as an essential life force and as a sanctuary. This imagery echoes my deep feelings and connection with Baldessin Studio. Using my intuitive process, tarletan was modelled, stitched and processed as a photogravure. This twisting tree-like form evokes freedom rather than control, while the colour conjures the bush surrounds of the studio—a supportive, caring place that nurtures creative freedom.

Elizabeth Haigh (b.1957) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans printmaking, painting, textiles and photography. Haigh creates contemplative works that honour the earth’s rhythms, fragility and quiet grandeur. Her layered work, of colour, texture and stitch, evoke visual poems of the landscape, exploring both vulnerability and resilience.

A graduate of RMIT (Fine Art, Painting) and the University of Melbourne (Grad Dip Ed), Haigh has exhibited internationally, completed residencies in Argentina, Australia and Spain and was a finalist in East Gippsland Art Gallery 2024 Works on Paper Prize. Alongside her practice, Haigh has taught with leading institutions including Baldessin Studio, Tarrawarra Museum of Art and Fibre Arts Australia, and contributed to publications such as

Women Create (US).

To mark its 25th year, Baldessin Studio has embarked on a very special project—inviting 53 members of its community to create an editionable print for the Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection. Launching at Sydney Contemporary, the collection is a celebration of the incredible community of artists who engage in the life of the studio, as well as a fundraiser to ensure the organisation can continue its work and sustain its vision, “to inspire and enable innovative printmaking whilst upholding the Baldessin ethic of fostering creativity in all forms”.
