Nature and landscape are central to my work hence over the past 20 years I have carved the world around me into relief linocuts and woodcuts. Over time, I have gathered drawers of blocks—my alphabet of images. Each block is a specimen, a character, a small voice waiting to enter a larger story. Magpies have long held my fascination; I see them as watchful narrators of the environment. I spotted Saint Andrew during a masterclass at Baldessin Studio, St Andrews. He moved through the local landscape with quiet assurance—resourceful, alert, and curious about the people who entered the studio’s orbit. His presence stayed with me, and it seemed only natural that he should find a place within this portfolio.

Dianne Fogwell (b.1958) is an award-winning Australian artist, printmaker, and artists’ book practitioner. She is the founder of Studio One, Criterion Fine Art Press and Gallery, ANU Edition + Artist Book Studio, and Lewis Editions, and has exhibited widely in Australia and overseas. In 2018, she published A Printmaker’s Cookbook – Images in Relief, reflecting her 45-year career as an artist and educator. Her work is held in major national and international collections.
