Artist Statement
A small seaweed has attached itself to the digestive structure within a damaged sea urchin test (shell). Aristotle described sea urchins in his History of Animals as Aristotle’s lantern. Collected from the intertidal zone, the liminal space where lifeforms endure shifts in seawater, temperature and air at low tide—this lantern emits theharmonious interdependence of lifeforms in an intertidal kosmos. Wells was the recipient of the State LibraryVictoria Amor Residency at Baldessin Studio (2025) where she produced a series of photogravure prints exploring human-made changes to intertidal reefs in Port Phillip Bay due to global warming and rising sea temperatures.

Dianna Wells (b.1961) is a Naarm/Melbourne based artist engaging with ideas about landscape, botany and environmental change - with photography and photogravure. Wells began her career as a printmaker after studying at the Canberra School of Art, before completing a Master of Fine Art at Monash University in 2013. Her ongoing experimentation with the photographic medium stems from her background in both printmaking and design.
