I noticed many native birds at Baldessin Studio and the one that caught my eye was the gorgeous crested pigeon that is so underrated and yet such a magnificent bird. Non-aggressive (not usually) and quite loving with each other, often seen in pairs, I watch them preen each other all the time and the way they coo. They are part of our local areas, including St Andrews, and I have seen them around St Andrews when I go to Baldessin Studio each year to create prints or to learn new printmaking methods.

Chelle Destefano (b.1979) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Creswick, whose practice involves drawing, painting, printmaking, video and textiles. She was the winner of the Nillumbik Art Prize (2025) and Lake Art Prize (2020), as well as finalist in a number of other art prizes.

Launching at Sydney Contemporary, the collection is a celebration of the incredible community of artists who engage in the life of the studio, as well as a fundraiser to ensure the organisation can continue its work and sustain its vision, “to inspire and enable innovative printmaking whilst upholding the Baldessin ethic of fostering creativity in all forms”.
