Artist Statement
Brent Harris has collaborated with Baldessin Studio on a number of print projects including translation of drawings for his 2021 Stations of the Cross series into photogravure plates. The Walk also takes a recent drawing – conté on laid paper – as the basis for a hand-coloured photogravure print. It is part of his ongoing drawing practice using Surrealist-inspired automatic techniques that allow emergent forms to appear. As Hugh McManus has recently written of similar drawings, although the playful use of conté owes a debt to Seurat, “the repertoire of figures fashioned by this game is entirely Harris’ own. As Yve-Alain Bois writes of Seurat; “no image could exist before being embodied in this paper and in this blackness, which give it birth”. Harris’ drawings, even denser and darker, share in this spirit of optical and generative tactility.”  

Brent Harris (b.1959) is a New Zealand born Melbourne-based artist whose work explores a range of recurring themes, forms and motifs that emerge at the intersection of abstraction and figuration. He is widely collected with work in many national and state public collections. His 2024 retrospective at the Art Gallery of South Australia and Tarrawarra Museum of Art celebrated four decades of work across painting, drawing and printmaking.
