Artist Statement
The first thing you notice is the silence. Before the fires, Leanganook was a constantly moving soundscape, crackling with energy. Now the trees are stripped bare, twisted blackened sentinels, so the wind, while blowing, is eerily quiet, the birds too are gone. For now. Because although it is possible to stand in the devastation to see, feel and hear only absence and be haunted by memories of that which is lost, yearn for it, the mountain is both more flawed yet more precious. And meanwhile, some seeds wait and wait and wait, for the breath of hell, the blackened ground, the carpet of ash; what looks like the death of a mountain is it coming alive, bursting free. Chaos and order form an unruly partnership in the greatest of ironies: fire brings life.

Michael Wolfe (b.1962) has had over 40 solo exhibitions, numerous group shows including; the 2019 Castlemaine State Festival with the exhibition Shimmer; the 2020 contemporary landscape survey show (Con)textural Landscapes at Bendigo Art Gallery with Ben Quilty, Rosalie Gascoigne, Rover Thomas; National Portrait Gallery Prize (2022/23) touring exhibition; and collaborated with renowned Australian author Alex Miller in the international collaboration project and exhibition Now&Them in Shanghai China.

Wolfe’s 2022 exhibition, a collaboration with writer Kirsten Krauth and lyrics by Nick Cave, Someone To Watch Over Me – The Better Angels of Our Nature, was part of St Kilda Writer’s Week, Ballarat International Photo Biennale and International Poetry Day. His exhibition of 20 portraits of artists over 70 twenty/seventy was held at Castlemaine Art Museum in 2024, with an accompanying documentary and radio series.

Wolfe has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally and his work is included in public, corporate and private collections.

To mark its 25th year, Baldessin Studio has embarked on a very special project—inviting 53 members of its community to create an editionable print for the Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection. Launching at Sydney Contemporary, the collection is a celebration of the incredible community of artists who engage in the life of the studio, as well as a fundraiser to ensure the organisation can continue its work and sustain its vision, “to inspire and enable innovative printmaking whilst upholding the Baldessin ethic of fostering creativity in all forms”.
