Artist Statement
Silver Thistle Étude reflects my enduring fascination with thistles, portraying them as defiant migrants: mysterious, resilient, exquisite and graceful. I present them as portraits, isolated from their environment and rendered in sharp, fragmented detail, imbued with significance and personality. My chosen subject is both aesthetic and ecological, as I see thistles as representing the beautiful yet unforgiving edge of nature’s retaliation against human meddling. My befriending of thistles and return to a non-judgemental admiration of their splendour, is a call for humility toward nature and a plea for purposeful, peaceful coexistence between the human and natural worlds. For several years, Baldessin Studio has provided me with the techniques, tools and visual language through which to express our shared ecological values.

Beata Tworek’s (b.1961) lifelong career as an art conservator and her involvement in art and science culminated in her passion for art photography and photogravure. Her practice is centred on investigating the forms, textures and patterns of nature. She draws on the rich tradition portrayed in painting, printing and photography while experimenting with advanced photographic techniques commonly used in art conservation. Tworek is interested in a contemplative, focused approach to the study of harmony, colour and texture as features of aesthetic significance in her explorations of the natural world. Her work has been shown in both solo and group exhibitions.
