Artist Statement
Glimpse is a quick look and a possibility of understanding. It is also a double idea of us getting a glimpse into the woman.

Barbie Kjar (b.1957) is a Tasmanian artist working primarily in printmaking and drawing. Kjar completed a Masters of Fine Art at RMIT (2000) and Bachelor of Fine Arts and Education, University of Tasmania (1987). She has been the

recipient of several Australia Council grants and undertaken residencies in France, Italy, Japan, Mexico and Spain. She has held 40 solo exhibitions in Australia and more recently in Barcelona and Tokyo, as well as China, Korea, Siberia, France, Canada, USA and Japan.

Her work is held by the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; Tasmanian Museum and Gallery, Hobart; Artbank, Sydney; Parliament House, Canberra; and several regional and university galleries. Kjar was recently awarded the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing (2024), the James Northfield scholarship at Australian Print Workshop (2019) and her work was selected for Impact 10, International Print Exhibition in Santander, Spain (2019). She was the winner of the Bay of Fires Art Prize in 2015.

To mark its 25th year, Baldessin Studio has embarked on a very special project—inviting 53 members of its community to create an editionable print for the Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection. Launching at Sydney Contemporary, the collection is a celebration of the incredible community of artists who engage in the life of the studio, as well as a fundraiser to ensure the organisation can continue its work and sustain its vision, “to inspire and enable innovative printmaking whilst upholding the Baldessin ethic of fostering creativity in all forms”.
