Artist Statement
Since first walking through the bluestone doors of Baldessin Studio in 2015, I have experienced the studio as an artist, technician and studio manager. Each role has offered a different way of being, but over time they began to naturally overlap. The three figures in Dancers are suspended, spinning around each other, caught in a kind of perpetual,dizzying motion. I see them as different versions of myself moving alongside one another, rather than beingseparated states. There’s something of the studio in that movement too, with the constant flow of artists, projects, conversations, ideas and the community that holds it all together. A day at the studio is a whirlwind, but the very best kind.

August Carpenter (b.1989) is an artist interested in the distortive power of our senses and how they interfere with our perception and recollection of landscape, place and relationships. Documenting the sensory experience has become an integral part of her research, as has an engagement with material and technical processes. With afocus spanning her immediate surroundings to geographical locations not yet experienced, August describes a need to understand the natural phenomena of the world to be an underpin of her practice.

August was awarded the Castlemaine Experimental Print Prize (2025) and has been the recipient of the James Northfield Lithography Scholarship at the Australian Print Workshop (2023) and received the inaugural State Library Victoria & Baldessin Studio Tate Adams Memorial Fellow (2019).

August is represented by Australian Galleries – Melbourne and Sydney.

To mark its 25th year, Baldessin Studio has embarked on a very special project—inviting 53 members of its community to create an editionable print for the Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection. Launching at Sydney Contemporary, the collection is a celebration of the incredible community of artists who engage in the life of the studio, as well as a fundraiser to ensure the organisation can continue its work and sustain its vision, “to inspire and enable innovative printmaking whilst upholding the Baldessin ethic of fostering creativity in all forms”.
