Artist Statement
I first started working with Baldessin Studio in 2008, attending a preliminary polymer photogravure workshop run by Silvi Glattauer. The resultant series Seven Apparitions was created and proofed at Baldessin Studio, and is now represented in collections as diverse as the British Museum, London, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria and a number of regional galleries and private collections.

Fiesole furthers my engagement with photogravure, this time with the addition of hand-applied conté, conjuring a deep and matt inky black as a key element. Based on a detail from a badly damaged Baroque painting encountered in Fiesole, Italy. The work speaks to time and its travails, as well as Roland Barthes concept of the ‘punctum’ – highlighting an incidental yet poignant detail, in this case the tear in the image of a flailing arm.

Andrew Browne (b. 1960) is a Melbourne based Australian artist born 1960. He works across painting, printmaking, drawing, photography and sculpture. He has exhibited consistently since the 1980’s including forty-six solo exhibitions and over one hundred and fifty group exhibitions at both commercial and public galleries. Surveys of his work have been held at Bendigo Art Gallery (1999), Gippsland Art Gallery (2012) and the Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne (2016). His work is represented in significant public collections nationwide including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Museum of Contemporary Art - Sydney, the Art Gallery of NSW, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the Parliament House Collection - ACT, the TarraWarra Museum of Art and many regional and university collections including Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong and Gippsland Art Galleries.

In 2009 the British Museum in London acquired the suite of photogravures “Seven Apparitions”. He was awarded the Australian Print Workshop – Collie Print Trust Fellowship in 2013, and alongside a number of other residencies he has been awarded the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing (2016) and the Geelong Contemporary Art Prize (2018).

To mark its 25th year, Baldessin Studio has embarked on a very special project—inviting 53 members of its community to create an editionable print for the Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection. Launching at Sydney Contemporary, the collection is a celebration of the incredible community of artists who engage in the life of the studio, as well as a fundraiser to ensure the organisation can continue its work and sustain its vision, “to inspire and enable innovative printmaking whilst upholding the Baldessin ethic of fostering creativity in all forms”.
