Using lino blocks and stencils that can be cut up and reassembled, explore colour and shape in new ways.

Work with internationally recognised print artist Barbie Kjar to explore the versatility of jigsaw lino block printmaking. Unlike traditional lino block printing which relies on the power of line work, jigsaw printing allows dynamic forms to take shape. Each piece of the jigsaw can be inked and coloured individually.

In the first day Barbie will introduce the jigsaw method and then in the second day she will show how paper and/or acetate stencils can be used to add new layers. Construct, deconstruct, with the jigsaw lino blocks then add and subtract with stencils. Explore the many options to transform your image.

This is one of the most versatile printmaking techniques and the skills you will learn in this workshop can easily be used in your home studio.

Day 1

  • Transferring images to lino

  • Cutting your jigsaw blocks

  • Inking and printing with lino

  • Secrets of successful registration

Day 2

  • Additive and subtractive printing techniques

  • Printing multiple versions of a single print

  • Working with lino and stencils in your home studio

  • Working with innovative colour palettes

In 2016 Kjar delved into Mokulito further learning directly from Ewa Budka at Art Print Residence in Arenys de Munt, Spain. Her interest was first sparked in 2004 when she was introduced to wood lithography at the Tokyo Art School during an Australia Council residency in Tokyo.
