Are you interested in colour? Would you like to enhance your art practice through the use of colour? Perhaps you would like to boost your confidence in colour mixing! Do you struggle to mix the exact colour you want, repeating the same colour combinations again and again, or are you overwhelmed at the thought of choosing colour combinations?

In this two-day workshop, you will learn ways to mix myriads of colours from which you will produce a reference guide for future colour work.

In addition to Elizabeth’s theoretical and practical demonstrations, you will make a colour swatch book on beautiful Arches paper as a reference guide to have on hand in your studio. Part of this workshop will be using your new colour mixing abilities and reference guide to assist your practice, and to develop new colour palettes for your work. The second part of this workshop will focus on the application of your newfound colour mixing knowledge to explore the unexpected as you have fun applying different colour combinations to create spontaneous, abstract and serendipitous monotypes!

This workshop aims to equip you with a working knowledge of colour mixing through practical exercises. Examine and explore colour through direct observation using various reference materials provided. Use water-based paint to mix and match colours observed in leaves, bark etc and other objects to produce swatches and samplers, suitable as a future reference guide.

This workshop will include:

  • Practical way of working with colour and colour mixing

  • Methods for accurate colour mixing

  • Mix colour with a limited range of colours

  • Making ‘swatch’ samplers

  • Take home ‘swatch’ samplers with annotations for future reference

  • Hone your colour observation skills

  • Have fun playing with colour as you create simple monotypes

  • All materials are included but you are welcome to bring along your own watercolour paints and brushes

This workshop is ideal for printmakers, painters, and anyone wanting to understand colour mixing and blending.
