On the second Monday of the month. learn or refresh a different printmaking technique with highly acclaimed and experienced printmaker (technician and artist) Barbie Kjar.

“Barbie Kjar is a talented teacher as well as superb artist, and her generosity, professionalism and sense of fun always makes working with her a totally inspiring experience.”

Printmakers Program 2019:

12 August – Drypoint

Learn how to achieve the ultimate rich black line using the simple but effective drypoint mark on an acetate plate.  Apart from the ink, no chemicals are needed to create the printed mark.  Dry point is the most direct form of intaglio printing, where a sharp point is used to scratch a mark directly into a metal, perspex or (in our case) acetate plate.

(no workshop in September 2019)

14 October - Carborundum

Learn how to achieve rich tone, texture and/or very strong colour applying carborundum grit and PVA glue on an acetate plate. Drypoint lines can be combined with the carborundum grit so consider bringing along the drypoint plate you made if you participated in the drypoint workshop.

11 November - Etching

Etching is an intaglio print making technique that uses a chemical reaction to achieve an incised line on a metal plate. Learn how to coat a copper plate with chemical resistant ‘ground’ then draw your lines in the ‘ground’ to expose the metal.  Your plate will then be submerged in a bath of Ferric Chloride to ‘bite’ the lines into the metal plate from which you will then pull a print.

9 December - Stencilling

Stencil and Carborundum by Barbie Kjar

This workshop will demonstrate ways of introducing paper and acetate stencils to your printmaking. It allows you to add another layer to your drypoint, carborundum and etched prints.  The results can transform an image.  Apart from the inks used to pull the print, stencilling is chemical free.

$200 per one-day printmaking workshop (full day’s tuition) with Barbie Kjar. 10am - 4pm Materials partly supplied, and includes Studio Access fee.
